Winter Uniform Care Tips for Northeast Ohio
When winter hits Cleveland with snow, salt, freezing rain, and slush, your uniforms face harsher conditions than during mild months. At Model Uniforms, we understand that your staff must look sharp and feel confident — even in subzero temperatures. To that end, we recommend a few key practices to keep your uniforms clean, durable, and dependable all season long.
1. Pre-treat stains immediately
Salt, road grime, and grease show up faster on dark or light workwear against winter backdrops. Encourage employees to rinse off salt or grit as soon as they can, using cool water. Use a stain-pre-treatment spray or gel on trouble spots before laundering to prevent staining from setting in.
2. Wash in warm — not hot — water
High heat can break down fibers, especially in performance fabrics or blended uniform pants and shirts. Use the warmest water recommended on the care label. Add a laundry booster specifically designed to tackle winter residue (salt, oil, pollutants). Avoid overload — give garments room to move so detergent and water circulate properly.
3. Use gentle, pH-balanced detergents
Winter contaminants like road salts can be harsh on fabric finishes. A detergent with neutral pH helps preserve fabric strength and resists abrasion. Skip bleach unless the uniform fabric is bleach-safe and use it sparingly. Add a color-safe, fiber-safe additive to help prevent fading in high-contrast uniform designs.
4. Air dry when possible, or tumble with caution
High heat in dryers can degrade elastic waistbands, stretch inserts, or technical fabric membranes. Instead, hang uniforms to air dry in a well-ventilated, temperature-controlled area. If you must tumble dry, use a low or medium setting. Remove garments while still slightly damp to finish drying on hangers.
5. Rotate uniforms and mending
If your team keeps several sets of uniforms, rotate them daily to reduce friction and wear on any one set. At Model Uniforms, we inspect each uniform using our MAC™ Tracking System to flag worn panels or missing buttons for repair. Regular mending reduces the need for full replacements mid-season.
6. Seal seams and zippers
Winter moisture can seep through seams and zipper tracks. Use seam sealants (clear, fabric-safe) or add a light water-repellant spray on outer layers or polos. This helps to prevent snow and slush from soaking through. Make sure the product is compatible with embroidered patches and does not discolor fabric.
7. Address odor and bacteria build-up
Cold months often lead to extended wear under base layers and outerwear. Use detergents with enzyme or antimicrobial action to combat sweat and bacteria. Add an occasional oxygen-based soak or sanitizing laundry additive to kill microbes and extend freshness.
8. Inspect, store, and prep off-season
After winter, have your uniforms professionally cleaned and inspected. Store them in breathable garment bags in a dry, cool place. Before spring, check for weak spots (cuffs, knees, stitching) and repair them. This ensures your uniforms remain durable season to season.
